Weavature

Weavature

Heritage Reinvented

Weavature is a bold celebration of Maltese craftsmanship, where the timeless art of traditional weaving meets the precision of contemporary steelwork. Designed by I+A Limited, this unique piece was brought to life through the skilled hands of Antoine Vella (Weaving Malta) and Christian Bezzina (Medina Steels) — a true collaboration that bridges heritage with modernity.

This project was made possible through the support of the Malta Crafts Foundation under the Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti 2024 grant, and was awarded 1st prize for Inspiring Artisanship and Innovation through Collaboration at the 2023 edition of the same award

From Concept to Craft
Weavature began as a design-led exploration at I+A—an attempt to fuse the precision of digital design with the depth of traditional craft. Using parametric tools, the studio developed the chair’s form and structure, balancing ergonomics, tension, and material efficiency.
The woven seat, based on rising global temperatures, was developed as a pattern by I+A and brought to life in dialogue with master weaver Antoine Vella, whose craft grounded the concept in tradition. The steel frame, shaped and welded by Christian Bezzina, followed the design’s call for strength with restraint, holding the fabric in tension without excess.
Every step was shaped by exchange—between studio and workshop, design and making. The result is a singular object authored through collaboration, where heritage becomes structure, and data becomes pattern.

I+A

Designers

I+A is a multidisciplinary design studio based in Malta, founded in 2018 by a team of architects, technologists, and creatives. Their work spans architectural design, interior design, furniture design, and public art, often blending digital tools with traditional processes. For Weavature, I+A led the design vision and project direction, bringing together materials, makers, and meaning to craft an object that is both contemporary and culturally grounded.

Antoine Vella

Weaver

A seventh-generation weaver based in Rabat, Malta, Antoine Vella has dedicated over forty years to preserving and evolving the island’s rich textile traditions. Through his practice, Weaving Malta, he continues to produce high-quality, handwoven work while exploring new applications for the craft. For Weavature, Antoine translated centuries of weaving knowledge into a modern expression of structure, comfort, and heritage.

Christian Bezzina

Steel Fabricator

Christian Bezzina is the founder of Medina Steels, a specialist workshop for artisan metalwork located in a restored WWII-era building in Attard. With a background in engineering and a passion for material precision, Christian creates bespoke furniture and sculptural pieces. In Weavature, he crafted the steel frame with a balance of technical refinement and visual restraint, anchoring the project in strength and clarity.

Award Winning Collaboration

Weavature was made possible through the support of the Malta Crafts Foundation under the Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti 2024 grant. The Foundation played a vital role in enabling collaboration between contemporary designers and traditional artisans, championing innovation rooted in cultural craft. The project was also awarded 1st prize for Inspiring Artisanship and Innovation through Collaboration in the 2023 edition of the award.
