Following the diagnostic success of Workshop 1, the FiftySix Design Talks 2026 Cycle 1 continued at the Valletta Design Cluster with “Workshop 2: Ideate.” Led by Joeaby Vassallo, Director at I+A, this session marked the transition from identifying industry friction to architecting a tangible deliverable: The FiftySix “Navigator” Playbook.

Designing Under Constraint: The Robinson Principle

The ideation phase was governed by the “Robinson Principle”, a design discipline inspired by the idea of making progress using only what is already “on the table.” Participants were tasked with proposing a solution that requires zero external funding, no new policy dependencies, and no permission structures. The goal was to leverage the human capital and technical infrastructure (such as the VDC Makerspace and open-source platforms) identified in the previous session.

The Solution: A Technical Roadmap

The workshop concluded that a static directory is not enough to bridge the “Value Gap.” Instead, the room reached a consensus on a dual-layered tool:

• The Integrated Playbook: This navigator breaks down the journey from idea to shelf into five distinct stages. Crucially, it integrates Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) and Intellectual Property (IP) Milestones. This allows designers to self-assess their progress and ensures they are legally protected before engaging with external investors.
• The Support Board: A dynamic “Point of Focus” consisting of a board of industry practitioners and institutional representatives. This group will act as a directional guide, helping designers navigate the complexities of the playbook and connecting them with relevant entities like the Commerce Department.

The Way Forward

The project now enters the Testing Phase. An “Alpha” version (Draft 0.1) of the Playbook has been produced and will be stress-tested by real-world users and stakeholders. The feedback from this stage will inform the final “Release Candidate” to be presented at our concluding public panel discussion.
