Brief: Design & Build an Interactive Monumental Art
Location: Valletta, Malta
Status: Complete [2017]
Vibrance explores the idea of progress through the deconstruction of form, drawing an analogy with Valletta’s urban and cultural evolution. Informed by principles of Gestalt philosophy, the installation is composed of individual fragments which, when assembled, form a coherent whole. This composition acts as a metaphor for Valletta’s living community: a collective made up of individuals that functions as a single body in the negotiation of culture, heritage and contemporary life.
The installation expresses the latent energy of the city through its mass and its placement within everyday pedestrian flows, allowing movement and presence to become integral to the work. The passing crowd is registered, interpreted and reflected back, establishing a reciprocal relationship between people and the built artefact. During evening hours, each column responds to nearby movement through a system of sensors, translating activity into subtle variations in light and rhythm and reinforcing an ongoing dialogue between space, technology and public life.
